The Passion – Crucifixion , God’s People Court, Demand of Justice, Supply of Peace

Mystery of Godliness
• Php 2:5-11 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, (6)
who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a
thing to be grasped, (7) but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-
servant, and being made in the likeness of men. (8) Being found in appearance
as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross
Mystery of Godliness 2
(9) For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name
which is above every name, (10) so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL
BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and that
every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Peter’s Revelation by the Spirit
• Mat 16:15-17 He *said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" (16) Simon
Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (17) And Jesus
said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not
reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
Peter’s Fleshly Interest
• Mat 16:21-23 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go
to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. (22) Peter took Him
aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never
happen to You." (23) But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan!
You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's
interests, but man's."
Peter Hasn’t Changed
• Joh 13:6-8 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, "Lord, do You wash
my feet?" (7) Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize
now, but you will understand hereafter." (8) Peter *said to Him, "Never shall

You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part
with Me."
Peter Overestimates
• Luk 22:31-34 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift
you like wheat; (32) but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and
you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." (33) But he
said to Him, "Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!" (34)
And He said, "I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have
denied three times that you know Me."
Knowing the Debacle – Jesus Prepares More
• Mar 14:33-34 And He *took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to
be very distressed and troubled. (34) And He *said to them, "My soul is deeply
grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch."
Peter’s Foolish Bravado – Dopamine in the Wrong Place
• Joh 18:10-11 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high
priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus. (11)
So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father
has given Me, shall I not drink it?"
• Cup = God solution
• or Sword = my way
Peter’s Humiliation
• Joh 18:17 Then the slave-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, "You are not
also one of this man's disciples, are you?" He *said, "I am not."
• Joh 18:25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to
him, "You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I
am not."
• Joh 18:26-27 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one
whose ear Peter cut off, *said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?" (27)
Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

Peter’s Old Nature Arises & Repentance
• Mar 14:71-72 But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you
are talking about!" (72) Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And
Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before a rooster
crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And he began to weep.
• Luk 22:61-62 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the
word of the Lord, how He had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will
deny Me three times." (62) And he went out and wept bitterly.
Peter Recalled
• Jesus knew each one – strength & weakness
• Know your weakness – Natural Peter died
• Jesus prepared them to eventually lead
• he didn’t lose anyone – Jesus prayed
• Even in His great trial, Jesus kept watch on Peter tumbling
• Peter repented when Jesus looked
• Restoration, Restitution
Who Lives in You
• Gal 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the
Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
John Remained Faithful – New Family Begun
• Joh 19:25-27 Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross
of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and
Mary Magdalene. (26) When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple
whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, "Woman, behold,
your son!" (27) Then He *said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From
that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
Father Forgive – ignoble & Powerful, Thief & Centurion
• Luk 23:33-34 When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified
Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. (34) But
Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are
doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.

Worst Saved
• Luk 23:40-43 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even
fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? (41) "And
we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our
deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." (42) And he was saying, "Jesus,
remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" (43) And He said to him,
"Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."
Highest Saved
• Luk 23:44-47 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole
land until the ninth hour, (45) because the sun was obscured; and the veil of
the temple was torn in two. (46) And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said,
"Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Having said this, He
breathed His last. (47) Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he
began praising God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent."
Wisdom of the Cross
• 1Co 1:22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom;
• 1Co 1:23-24 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to
Gentiles foolishness, (24) but to those who are the called, both Jews and
Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
It is Finished
• Mar 15:38-39 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
(39) When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way
He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"
• Joh 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is
finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It Is Finished
• It is finished – As if he had said: “I have executed the great designs of the
Almighty – I have satisfied the demands of his justice – I have accomplished all
that was written in the prophets, and suffered the utmost malice of my
enemies; and now the way to the holy of holies is made manifest through my
blood.” An awful, yet a glorious finish. Through this tragical death God is
reconciled to man, and the kingdom of heaven opened to every believing soul.

Fragrance of the Cross
• 2Co 2:14-16 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ,
and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every
place. (15) For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being
saved and among those who are perishing; (16) to the one an aroma from
death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for
these things?
Tombs Opened for Earthquake
• Mat 27:50-52 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His
spirit. (51) And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to
bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. (52) The tombs were
opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
Three Who Came Into Limelight
• Mar_15:21 They *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country,
Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross.
• Joh_19:38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but
a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body
of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.
• Joh_19:39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing
a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.
Death on the Cross
• What happens when someone is crucified? He can breathe in (inhale) but can’t
breathe out (exhale). Air is trapped in the lungs & pressure increases in pleural
cavity & lungs. Lung artery pressure & Right heart pressure which is 25/10
mmHg go up to levels of Left side pressure. Right ventricle is thin & begins to
fail. Fluid leaks & fills pleural cavity & pericardial sac. Heart is tight & fails.
Cardiac Tamponade. Roman Govt. checks death of victim by piercing heart with
spear. In Christ case blood clots & fluid came out when his heart was pierced.
Death was confirmed. A victim is nailed thru the wrist between ulna & radius
bones.  Pilate asked if Jesus had died that fast. Mark 15:44, John 19:33,34. The
centurion confirmed His death. That was a part of the medico-legal Roman
exercise to confirm death before burial

• However, some think that the words, as they stand in the Hebrew and Syriac,
are capable of a translation which destroys all objections, and obviates every
difficulty. The particle למה lamah, may be translated, to what – to whom – to
what kind or sort – to what purpose or profit: Gen_25:32; Gen_32:29;
Gen_33:15; Job_9:29; Jer_6:20; Jer_20:18; Amo_5:18; and the verb עזב azab
signifies to leave – to deposit – to commit to the care of. See Gen_39:6;
Job_39:11; Psa_10:14, and Jer_49:11. The words, taken in this way, might be
thus translated: My God! my God! to what sort of persons hast thou left me?
The words thus understood are rather to be referred to the wicked Jews than to
our Lord, and are an exclamation indicative of the obstinate wickedness of his
crucifiers, who steeled their hearts against every operation of the Spirit and
power of God. See Ling. Brit. Reform. by B. Martin, p. 36.
