Gift of Jesus’ Myrrh to Me – Suffering Shepherd & Saved Sheep

 

Three Gifts

  • When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! 11They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11 NLT
  • Myrrh – suffering Messiah
  • Frankincense – High Priest
  • Gold – King

 

Magi & Daniel

  • Mary & Joseph were not in the stable
  • They worshipped Baby Jesus & not His mother
  • Later Herod wanted babies under 2 yrs killed
  • Magi took time to come
  • Magi was the official name of royal counsellors of Persia
  • They probably knew of Daniel’s Prophecy in Dan 9:26

 

Myrrh, Mire, Messiah

  • Myrrh was an apt gift bespeaking the travail around Messiah’s incarnation
  • Mary was pregnant before wedlock – it was a harsh journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem & a harsh night in the stable amidst animals, straw & dung
  • Joseph was a poor carpenter & for Jesus’s dedication, they offered the poor offering – turtle dove
  • Jesus would be insulted as the carpenters son

 

Why Myrrh

  • Myrrh at Birth,
  • Myrrh at Crucifixion
  • Myrrh at Burial
  • Myrrh as Royal Prince – Ps 45
  • Myrrh held the incense together – so that frankincense could burn over a long time
  • At embalming. it not only added aroma but also delayed putrefaction

Myrrh Tree

  • the dried gum of a species of balsam (Balsamodendron myrrha). This is a stunted tree growing in Arabia, having a light-gray bark; the gum resin exudes in small tear-like drops which dry to a rich brown or reddish-yellow, brittle substance, with a faint though agreeable smell and a warm, bitter taste. It is still used as medicine Mar_15:23.

Myrrh Spoke for His Life

  • All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Isa 53:6
  • Heb 12:2 – contradictions of sinners
  • Sheep are weak: Defenseless (Wolf/Coyote) (Spread, Huddles) Fall over—Can’t get up!
  • Sheep are witless: Follow each other into danger.
  • Sheep are wayward: Wander!
  • ! Don’t do great on my own—Stressed, Anxious, Overwhelmed.
  • Eat too much—Don’t rest enough! Overspend! Overwork! Over worry!

Myrrh at Gethsemane

  • Why should you follow Jesus? (Magnitude of Suffering/Sacrifice)
  • Garden of Gethsemane—Sorrowful and troubled. !Blood dripped from brow—
  • Haemohydrosis—Extreme shock/trauma. Capillaries around sweat pores leak blood into the sweat. My soul was overwhelmed point of death—Not my will!
  • Arrested—Falsely accused—Unfairly tried—Sentenced death crucifixion.
  • !Stripped naked (Shame)—Crown thorns (1-2 inch)

 

How Jesus Became Myrrh

  • Spit on him—Struck him—Whipped him—Beat him again Blows head drive thorns scalp. Isa implies likely pulled out beard—Beaten so bloody—Unrecognizable.
  • Carry cross bar about 100 pounds, 650 yards path known as “Way of Suffering” crucified at Golgotha. Nails (7 inches) driven into wrist and feet!
  • Hang on instrument of torture reserved for slaves, traitors, wicked.

 

Fruit of Jesus’ Travail

  • rich man’s grave… (Joseph Arimathea) 11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. Isa 53:8-9

  • 3 humiliation & coronation
  • 4 disease & anointing
  • 5 tree was ugly, but myrrh was used for beauty
  • 6 incense for God & perfumecto man
  • 7 prophet priest & King
  • 8 priest & prostitute
  • 9 traded & gifted 10 richest & poor

 

Jesus’ Myrrh in a Believer’s Life 1

  • To trust the Lord when there isn’t enough
  • Php 4:12-13 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  (13)  I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
  • 2Co 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

 

Myrrh Makes Oil of Joy 2

Isa 61:3  to grant to those who mourn in Zion– to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;

This is a real myrrh ministry – Long intercession covering the needs patches foibles frustrations fruss fret wounds of people whom you disciple –

When we are persecuted for witness & righteousness

  • CHOSEN & CALLED as Myrrh
  • Heb 12:2-3 NHEB 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and completer of the faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him who has endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you may not become tired and give up.
  • 1Co 4:12-13 NHEB 12 We toil, working with our own hands. When people curse us, we bless. Being persecuted, we endure. 13 Being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the dirt wiped off by all, even until now.

4 Myrrh, in perfume of friends, makes fragrance last longer

 

  • Pro_27:9 Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.
  • We need friends who stick with us in trouble
  • Myrrh tree with ugly bark, because of many piercings, ooze the fragrant costly myrrh – one drop at a time – Jesus on the cross
  • Jesus on the cross – marred by torture & by vicarious sin bearing, became unrecognisable Is 53

 

5 Myrrh Merges Others

  • Myrrh also gels together competitive spices calamus cinnamon frankincense
  • So I am called to be gelling healing base that others may work together in Jesus’s yoke fellowship.
  • Not only I die & bear the cross crucifying my self, I have to do the same for others to be saved & to serve.
  • Why should I be the cementing glue for others’ contradictions. Because the Lord did the same. Serving alone is not NT Christanity.
  • Don’t advertise holy man of God but be the Witness –
